CASology this Sketch... Thank You!

Can anyone tell me why all the teachers cards seem to feature red apples?
Do no teachers fancy a Granny Smith or Golden Delicious LOL?!?

Thought I'd combine this weeks CASology Apple Cue Card with this weeks versatile CAS(E) this Sketch to create this CAS Teachers Thank You card (perhaps in anticipation!). Created by combining Lil Inker Designs Stitched Squares, Paper Smooches thank(s), Memory Box Typewriter Upper Case Alphabet and CC Designs Apple die cuts with papers from Crate Paper and Cosmo Cricket, together with some cork sheeting, and pop dots of course!

Mixed Media Ombre FUSION...

When I sat down to create this fortnights FUSION card, the card in my head incorporated an elephant stamped on book paper, then I discovered I had run out of white cardstock base - so on to Plan B - create a mixed media canvas of course!! What will your FUSION plan be?!? Will you be inspired by this fabulous sketch, or the fantastic elements in this cool photo, or will you create a FUSION of both?

I recently discovered a fabulous pad of gesso primed canvases from a local $2 shop, and used this as the base for my mixed media canvas. I created an ombre base by layering three different shades of pink Gelato, and blending with a baby wipe. Inspired by the overstamped text from the photo, I stamped Unity She Art Print Texture to create the text background, then overstamped with Prima Mixed Media Stamp by Julie Nutting, and Dylusions The Right Words sentiment strips. The Prima Mixed Media Stamp was stamped onto Kaisercraft and Echo Park patterned papers and fussy cut, before adhering in place over the stamped canvas, as were the sentiment strips.

All up from thinking about how I was going to get around running out of cardstock base to finished canvas took around 45 minutes - which is amazingly quick for me, especially considering this is the first mixed media canvas I have created. I would ideally have stamped the girl a little higher over the background text, but as it says:  "Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you decide to see beyond the imperfections", and I'M HAPPY :)

Hope to see you at the FUSION Challenge Blog soon, in the meantime, here's some more FABULOUS inspiration from the Design Team...

Have a Little Guesso What the Difference is...

With the current mixed media / art journalling trend, I thought I'd have a play and see the difference a little gesso can make to your cards.

In the first sample using a base of Kaisercraft music paper, I stamped the Neat & Tangled My Heart Sings bird and sentiment in Versamark Watermark Ink and heat embossed with American Crafts Pewter. By embossing this layer, you create a barrier which will stop your watercolours from ending up where you don't want them. Next I dipped a water brush into my Gelatos to create the watercolour fill.  The heart was filled in red, and the bird was filled in turquoise, then I added the darker blue. I found the watercolours easy to blend on this card as they bleed and blend into each other and the paper.

The second sample was created in exactly the same manner, with one simple exception - the Kaisercraft music paper was first primed using white gesso, applied in a thin layer with a paintbrush.  This white gesso layer served to tone down the background layer, so the stamped images take centre stage.  When embossing directly onto the paper, the Watermark Ink and some of the Pewter embossing powder bled into the paper, so the result was not as crisp as when I stamped onto the gesso.  When you use the gesso as a base, as it is a primer, this means the colours sit on top of the gesso layer.  The advantage of having gesso as a base is that if you make a mistake, you can easily remove colour from where it is not wanted by gently wiping the area with a baby wipe.  White gesso is a simple way to tone down any patterned paper so you can stamp and colour over it.

My Month In Numbers

All this talk of numbers brings me to...

How did I get here?  Well may you ask!  And who am I not to answer?

Whilst skimming the internet for some fabulous inspiration for the first FUSION challenge for September, I discovered this fabulous blog post on Five Ideas for Scrapbooking with Pages from Old Books, which had in turn been sourced from Julie Kirk's blogspot Notesonpaper.

Intrigued with her Month in Numbers post, I thought wow, I've moved interstate since I started school - I wonder how many kilometres it is between where I first started school and where I am now.  And then it dawned on me, although I did most of my schooling in Australia, I actually first started school in Belmont Massachusetts (and yes I did have to look up to see how that was spelled correctly LOL!).  And co-incidentally I have lived in Belmont in Australia too (but that's a whole other story!)

So from Massachusetts to Melbourne is 17014.421 km  I'd have to say - I've come a long way baby!!!

A CASE of Honouring Ombre...

Playing along with Jennifer Macguire's last week as CASE Study Muse, taking inspiration from the die cut elements, the arrows, hearts and Thank you theme, combined with this fortnights Moxiefab Tuesday Trigger Honouring Ombre.

The background is created by die cutting a sheet of white cardstock and a vertical strip of watercolour paper (just wider than the chevron vertical strip) using Lil Inker Designs Pieced Chevron die.  The die cut strip of watercolour paper was then painted in the various gradient colours using gelatos, and once dried these sections replaced into the original white cardstock diecuts.  The "thank you" die cuts were created using gelatos on watercolour paper, adhered to a piece of white cardstock for stability before die cutting using Paper Smooches Thanks and Memory Box Lowercase Type.  Similarly the heart was created in watercolour paper before die cutting with Simon Says Stamp Mini Heart.  The chevron die cut sheet was adhered to an extra piece of cardstock for stability before attaching to the card, and the flagtail banner and sentiment pop-dotted in place.

Retro Cottage Roses Recipe...

I found the perfect sentiment to play along with this weeks Catered Crop Sentiment-al Challenge and City Crafter Cottage Roses & Gingham Challenge, from Practicing Creativity:
ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes
she's cute as a button,
and sweet as a rose.
...and so a baby card began, with papers from Authentique, and the "Hello Sweet Baby" sentiment, teddy and button heart from WPlus9, matched with this weeks versatile Retro Sketch, and Lil Inkers Stitched Rectangle.

I always find I stamp my baby cards in brown ink rather than black - it seems more suited to the softness of baby cards - how about you?

Ombre AEI{heart}U...

Avery Elle's August Challenge is drawing to a close, and as my local Scrapbook Boutique now stocks Avery Elle, I couldn't let an opportunity like this pass by!!  I wanted to join in the fun at Moxie Fab Tuesday Trigger - Honouring Ombre too, but I switched up colours to this gorgeous pink American Crafts ombre paper, die cut using Avery Elle Rounded Diamonds.  The background and sentiment strips were both created by stamping Avery Elle All Squared Up in Tidal Pool ink on white cardstock, with the sentiment strip then die cut using Avery Elle Rounded Diamonds.  The Avery Elle The Man sentiment was stamped onto the American Crafts paper in Chocolate Chip ink and fussy cut before adhering to the rounded diamonds, and pop dotted for added dimension.  I felt that the card needed a little something, so I added some sequins from my stash to finish.
